The Design of the 2023 American Gold Buffalo

The Indian Head Nickel was created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. On the obverse of the coin is an revised version of this design. On the top right of the coin starting above the Chief’s forehead and ending around his mid nose is the word “LIBERTY.” This design has multiple histories embolden on is giving nod to the tribes of Iron Trail, Two Moons, and the Big Tree. On the bottom left the year of mintage is imprinted as well as the letter “F.” The is the artist’s initial just as a painter leaves their signature.

On the reverse side of the coin a great American Bison is standing leftward facing. On the top of the coin near the rim “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is printed. Below that also imprinted is “E PLURIBUS UNUM” above the buffalo’s back. Bottom left under the buffalo’s chin printed is “IN GOD WE TRUST.” At the bottom is of the coin is printed “1 OZ .9999 FINE GOLD.” Above this is printed “$50” which is the value the US Government has guaranteed.

2023 American Gold Buffalo Mintage

The coins are only printed the West Point branch unlike American Eagles. The US Mint produces those at multiple facilities while the American Buffalo is printed only at one. Each coin is made of 1 oz .9999 Pure Gold.  The Diameter of the coin 32.7 mm or 1.287 inches. The thickness of the coin is 2.95 mm or .116 inches. These coins have reeded edges. The denomination of the coin bears $50 that the US Government recognizes as legal tender.
